Is retinal detachment serious?
Retinal detachment is a very serious disease that affects vision, causing a black fog to appear in front of the eyes that significantly impairs visual function. If retinal detachment is not treated promptly, the eye will gradually lose vision until it finally loses all perception of sight. There are currently three causes of retinal detachment. The common cause is rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, which refers to the appearance of a tear in the retina leading to its detachment. Another type is tractional retinal detachment, commonly seen in diabetic retinopathy and other proliferative retinal disorders, where the retina is pulled away. There is also exudative retinal detachment. All require careful examination by a qualified doctor followed by timely treatment.
Can cataracts be treated without surgery?
In the early stages of cataracts, if one's vision is still greater than 0.3 and they feel it does not affect daily life, it is possible to initially observe without immediate intervention. If the cataracts have significantly worsened vision and greatly impacted the quality of life, and the severity of the cataracts is considerable, then it is advisable to undergo cataract surgery at an appropriate time. Currently, cataract surgery is very advanced, and the only treatment option for cataracts is surgical intervention, as medication is not very effective.
Can 600-degree acquired myopia be inherited?
A myopia of 600 degrees is considered high myopia, and it can be inherited by the next generation. Moreover, eyes with high myopia are prone to other complications at the back of the eye, such as retinal breaks, macular holes, and posterior staphyloma. Therefore, it is crucial to pay attention to high myopia and have regular check-ups. If both parents have high myopia, there is an 80% chance that their children will tend to be myopic. If one parent has high myopia, there is a 50% chance that their children will tend to be myopic. Even if neither parent is myopic, there is still about a 20% chance that their children will be myopic.
Can contact lenses correct astigmatism?
Contact lenses can be prescribed with a certain degree of astigmatism correction. If the astigmatism is less than 100 degrees, it can be converted into half of the spherical degree to create a prescription, and standard contact lenses can be worn to see clearly. If the astigmatism is greater than 100 degrees but less than 300 degrees, it is necessary to first prescribe sufficient spherical degree, then determine the astigmatism's axis and degree, and manufacture special astigmatic contact lenses. Wearing these can be more comfortable and provide clearer vision. Generally, very high degrees of astigmatism cannot be corrected with contact lenses, and wearing frame glasses is required instead.
What are the symptoms of glaucoma?
Glaucoma refers to a group of eye diseases characterized by increased eye pressure, leading to optic nerve atrophy and vision loss. The symptoms of glaucoma are mainly caused by increased eye pressure, resulting in eye pain. In cases of acute angle-closure glaucoma, symptoms include eye pain along with nausea, vomiting, photophobia, and tearing, which can easily be mistaken for neurological diseases. Chronic glaucoma symptoms, such as headache, nausea, and vomiting, are less pronounced, and eye discomfort is also more concealed during attacks, making early detection difficult. Therefore, it is important for glaucoma patients to undergo early examination and diagnosis, and to receive appropriate treatment in order to protect the optic nerve and prevent severe vision loss.
Postoperative Care for Cataract Surgery
Post-cataract surgery, it is crucial to maintain eye hygiene. Patients must follow the doctor's orders, regularly use antibiotic eye drops to prevent eye infections, and avoid allowing bacteria to enter the eye and cause intraocular inflammation, a very frightening postoperative complication. If intraocular inflammation occurs, the eye will become red and painful, and vision will significantly decrease, necessitating emergency surgery. Therefore, patients should clean their hands, apply eye drops on time, avoid letting tap water enter the eye, and refrain from rubbing their eyes to prevent reopening the wound and bacterial invasion. After surgery, it is also important to keep bowel movements regular to avoid constipation, which can increase abdominal pressure and cause eye pain due to straining.
What is good to eat for cataracts?
Research shows that cataracts are related to the lack of certain trace elements, vitamin B, vitamin C, and amino acids. Therefore, we should eat more vegetables, fruits, fish, meat, and animal organs that contain the above substances in our diet. The diet should be light, avoiding greasy, heavily salted foods and strong spices. At the same time, smoking and alcohol should be avoided to cultivate good eating habits and maintain balanced nutrition. Additionally, it is important to rest and boost one's immunity, which are beneficial for preventing cataracts and inhibiting their progression.
What department should you visit for nearsightedness?
People with nearsightedness should visit the ophthalmology department, as it is a major type of refractive error in outpatient services. Nearsightedness means clarity when looking at close objects, but blurriness when viewing objects at a distance. Currently, nearsightedness in adolescents is a significant health issue in China. Patients with nearsightedness should see an ophthalmologist at a qualified hospital for eye examinations to rule out any eye diseases, and then wear prescription glasses with the correct diopters to prevent the progression of nearsightedness. Additionally, those with nearsightedness must regularly visit the doctor to check their eyes.
Does cataract cause headache?
The main symptoms of cataracts include a decline in vision, with both near and far objects appearing unclear, and blurry vision. There is no significant eye pain or headaches, nor does it cause redness in the eyes. If headaches do occur, it is important to investigate the cause, such as checking if there is an increase in eye pressure or if the headache is caused by glaucoma, and to treat according to the specific cause. However, in the later stages or over-mature stage of cataracts, the lens may dissolve, which can potentially lead to phacolytic glaucoma, but this condition is very rare.
Astigmatism refers to a type of refractive error in which the eye does not focus light evenly onto the retina, often due to an irregular shape of the cornea or lens.
Astigmatism is a type of refractive error. Because our eyes are not a perfect sphere, they are more like an egg shape, with different meridians having different refractive powers. Thus, after imaging, the axial images may form in front of or behind the retina, rather than forming a focal point on the retina. Normally, astigmatism of some small degrees and with good axial alignment may not significantly affect vision. However, high degrees of astigmatism, especially irregular astigmatism, will definitely impact visual quality and require the prescription of special lenses to correct the astigmatism.
