The difference between vocal cord nodules and polyps

The difference between vocal cord polyps and vocal cord nodules
Vocal cord polyps and vocal cord nodules are diseases caused by incorrect pronunciation or overuse of the voice, with the main clinical manifestation being hoarseness. The difference between vocal cord polyps and vocal cord nodules lies in their appearance under a laryngoscope: Vocal cord polyps often occur on one vocal cord, typically in the anterior one-third where a translucent, smooth swelling is found. This swelling can either have a broad stalk or a smaller stalk, and often, a hole can be observed with respiration. Vocal cord nodules are smaller and usually located symmetrically on the anterior one-third of both vocal cords. This implies that while polyps are commonly found on one vocal cord, nodules occur symmetrically on the anterior one-third of both vocal cords. From a general perspective, vocal cord polyps are wider and larger, whereas vocal cord nodules are only nodular lesions.
Can vocal cord nodules be treated with medication?
Vocal cord nodules are small, dot-like or nodular protrusions occurring on the free edges of both vocal cords. These protrusions are quite small, and are primarily diagnosed using an electronic laryngoscope in clinical settings. For the treatment of vocal cord nodules, we can use certain medications, such as Huang's Resonant Voice Pills and Qingyin Sanjie Pills, which generally have relatively good effects. However, in clinical practice, we cannot rely solely on medication to treat vocal cord nodules. It is fundamental in the treatment of vocal cord nodules to avoid misuse of the voice. Attention must be paid to the training of correct pronunciation methods. Only through such measures can vocal cord nodules be fully treated, preventing recurrence or further development into vocal cord polyps.
Do vocal cord nodules require surgery?
Vocal cord nodules refer to symmetrical nodular elevations that appear on the free edges of both vocal cords. These nodules are mostly grain-like or granular protrusions. Vocal cord nodules are often caused by incorrect pronunciation, overuse of the voice, or screaming loudly, which are inappropriate vocal habits. Clinically, treatment primarily involves medication. The main treatments are some traditional Chinese medicines that clear the throat, such as Huang's Resounding Pills, and some corticosteroid medications can also be used. In addition to medication, clinical treatment of vocal cord nodules also involves attention to proper vocalization techniques and avoiding the misuse of the voice. With a combination of these methods, the vast majority of cases can be cured, meaning that through medication and proper vocal techniques, most can be healed.
