Why does closing one eye correct strabismus?
When a patient with strabismus closes one eye, the other deviated eye automatically returns to the correct position, which is a normal phenomenon. Strabismus refers to the direction of the eyes' gaze not being parallel; when one eye is looking straight ahead at a target, the gaze of the other eye will deviate. Based on the direction of deviation, strabismus can be classified into several types such as esotropia (inward deviation), exotropia (outward deviation), and vertical strabismus. When one eye is covered, the originally deviated eye will move to the correct position to clearly see the target directly in front; however, the covered eye will then exhibit deviation. Therefore, strabismus is not eliminated but merely appears from an external perspective that the deviated eye has returned to its normal position. To completely eliminate the symptoms of strabismus, surgery is required for correction.
What should be paid attention to in night blindness?
Night blindness is a common symptom in ophthalmology and can be caused by many reasons. Once night blindness occurs, patients need to promptly visit an eye clinic for a face-to-face examination to diagnose the cause, and then treat it based on the specific cause. The common causes include the following: First, it can be caused by late-stage glaucoma. Surgery is needed to reduce intraocular pressure to halt the progression of the disease; otherwise, it may lead to complete blindness. Second, it can be due to a deficiency of vitamin A, related to long-term poor diet and malnutrition. It often also includes symptoms such as dryness of the conjunctiva and softening of the cornea, which can be treated by taking vitamin A capsules orally. Third, it is caused by malnutrition of the rod cells in the retina. Currently, there is no effective treatment for this condition.
Can you get eyebrow tattooing with keratitis?
Keratitis is a common ophthalmic disease, caused by an infection in the black eyeball part of the eye. It is not recommended to get eyebrow tattooing during keratitis as it may aggravate the condition. Keratitis generally occurs due to neglect of eye hygiene or eye trauma, among other reasons. The main symptoms include eye congestion, redness, foreign body sensation, stabbing pain, photophobia, tearing, and decreased vision. When examined under a slit lamp microscope, tree-branch, map-like, circular, or oval lesions can be seen on the cornea. At this point, it is necessary to use anti-infection eye drops for treatment, such as ganciclovir eye drops for viral infections, levofloxacin eye drops or tobramycin eye drops for bacterial infections. Regular treatment for about two weeks generally leads to recovery. (Please follow the doctor's advice regarding medication.)
Will nearsightedness and astigmatism lead to blindness?
Myopia and astigmatism are common eye diseases and belong to two types of refractive errors, which can occur together. Myopia combined with astigmatism can lead to a decrease in vision, but it will not cause blindness. For patients with myopia and astigmatism, there are various methods to correct and treat these conditions, such as wearing frame glasses, rigid corneal contact lenses, undergoing laser surgery, or implanting artificial lenses to restore vision. In daily life, it is also important to develop good eye habits, avoiding using eyes in dim and shaking environments, and reducing the time spent on smartphones, TVs, and computers to prevent and delay the progression of myopia and astigmatism.
Will strabismus worsen if it is not treated?
Strabismus, if not treated, can potentially deteriorate over time. Strabismus is a common ocular disease, often caused by congenital developmental anomalies or external injuries to the eye, leading to misaligned visual axes. It can affect the appearance of the patient and may lead to complications such as amblyopia, as well as symptoms like double vision. Currently, surgery is the primary treatment method. The operation adjusts the position of the eye muscles' attachments and alters the tension of the eye muscles, thereby restoring the normal positional relationship between the eyes and aligning their visual axes. Patients need to visit the ophthalmology department of a hospital for an in-person examination and undergo comprehensive strabismus testing to determine the specific surgical plan. Without treatment, the degree of strabismus may continue to increase, leading to a worsening of symptoms.
Can high myopia with astigmatism be treated with surgery?
High myopia combined with astigmatism can also be treated surgically, but it requires the patient to be at least 18 years old, and both the myopia and astigmatism must have been stable for over a year without worsening. Before undergoing surgical treatment, a detailed eye examination is necessary. This includes an optometric examination to accurately measure the degree of myopia and astigmatism, a corneal topography test, and an ophthalmic ultrasound to understand the corneal curvature and thickness. Based on these parameters, a specific surgical plan is designed. If the patient’s corneal condition allows, laser surgery is the preferred method for correction. If the patient’s corneal condition is poor and not suitable for laser surgery, correction and treatment can be achieved through the implantation of a posterior chamber intraocular lens in phakic eyes.
How to treat trachoma stage 2?
Trachoma stage two requires treatment with antibiotic eye drops to kill the Chlamydia infecting the conjunctival tissue, thus alleviating symptoms. Commonly used eye drops include rifampicin, sodium sulfacetamide, and levofloxacin hydrochloride. Trachoma is a common eye disease caused by poor eye hygiene, such as rubbing the eyes with dirty hands, sharing personal hygiene items like basins and towels with others, or using unclean water to wash the face. It is imperative to treat the infection with medication as quickly as possible and to develop good eye hygiene habits to prevent the condition from worsening or spreading to family and friends. If trachoma is not treated promptly, it could lead to complications such as entropion, dry eye syndrome, and corneal vascularization. (Please follow medical advice regarding medication.)
Crystalline astigmatism is caused by what?
Lenticular astigmatism is a common eye disease, usually caused by the early formation of cataracts, where the lens becomes unevenly opaque. This leads to inconsistent refractive power in different directions, causing astigmatism. Patients can visit the ophthalmology department of a hospital for an optometry examination and a slit lamp microscope examination to confirm whether the astigmatism is due to the lens. For lenticular astigmatism, if the cataract has little impact on vision, it can initially be corrected by wearing glasses to improve vision. If the cataract has already significantly affected vision, cataract surgery can be performed to correct and treat it. After the surgery, the lenticular astigmatism will naturally disappear, and the patient’s vision will be improved.
Early symptoms of night blindness
Night blindness is a common early symptom of eye diseases, manifested by blurred vision in dim environments. When transitioning from bright to dark environments, it takes a longer time to gradually adapt. There are many causes of night blindness, such as common ones including vitamin A deficiency, malnutrition of rod cells, and advanced glaucoma. If symptoms of night blindness occur, it is necessary to visit an ophthalmologist in a hospital soon for diagnostic evaluation to determine the specific cause. For night blindness caused by vitamin A deficiency, recovery can be promoted by taking oral vitamin A capsules. There is currently no effective treatment for night blindness caused by malnutrition of rod cells. For those caused by advanced glaucoma, surgical treatment is needed to delay or prevent the progression of the condition.
How can children with minor astigmatism recover?
Mild astigmatism in children refers to astigmatism below 150 degrees, which can impact vision. Currently, once the degree of astigmatism is established, there are no effective non-surgical treatments available to reduce it. Since children cannot immediately undergo surgery to correct astigmatism, the alternative is to wear frame glasses or rigid corneal contact lenses to correct their vision and enhance their eyesight. In subsequent life, it's important to develop good eye habits, avoid squinting when looking at things, not use the eyes at close range for extended periods, and try to prevent the degree of astigmatism from increasing. After reaching adulthood, astigmatism can be corrected through laser surgery.
