Are there any treatments for high myopia and high astigmatism?

High myopia combined with high astigmatism can be treated in the following ways: First, correction by wearing frame glasses is the most widely adopted treatment method currently, which is affordable and safe. Second, using rigid corneal contact lenses for correction, which provide higher image quality than regular frame glasses. Third, correction can be done through laser surgery, such as excimer laser surgery, femtosecond laser surgery, and full femtosecond laser surgery, but it is only suitable for adult patients. Fourth, correction can be accomplished by implanting phakic intraocular lenses in the posterior chamber, generally suitable for patients whose corneal condition does not permit laser surgery, at a higher cost compared to laser surgery.

Do you need to wear glasses long-term if you have more than 200 degrees of astigmatism?

Patients with astigmatism of more than 200 degrees generally need to wear glasses long-term. Astigmatism of over 200 degrees is considered moderate and can significantly affect vision. If glasses are not worn to correct this, the patient's unaided vision is usually poor, causing blurriness and inconvenience in work and daily life. Additionally, prolonged unclear vision can easily lead to eye strain, and may even cause symptoms such as eye soreness, dizziness, and headaches. Astigmatism can be diagnosed through an optometric examination, which will determine the specific degree of astigmatism and its axis. Glasses can then be prescribed to correct it. If the patient is an adult who does not wish to wear glasses, laser surgery or the implantation of a posterior chamber intraocular lens can also be considered as treatment options.

How should I deal with just one inverted eyelash?

Having just one ingrown eyelash is a relatively mild symptom of trichiasis, but it can irritate the corneal epithelium, causing a sensation of a foreign body in the eye. For treatment, tweezers can be used to pluck the ingrown eyelash. Simply plucking the ingrown lash does not destroy the follicle that produces the ingrown eyelash, so recurrence is common. If the ingrown lashes recur frequently, electrolysis treatment can be considered. This involves inserting a specially designed probe into the follicle producing the ingrown lash and applying electricity to destroy the follicle, which helps prevent recurrence. However, electrolysis treatment for ingrown eyelashes can cause significant eye pain during the procedure. It is not recommended for elderly patients with underlying heart conditions.

Besides surgery, how can trichiasis be treated?

Patients with trichiasis can undergo electrolysis treatment for trichiasis in addition to surgical treatment to eliminate symptoms. This involves using a specially designed electric probe that enters the follicles of the misdirected eyelashes, and through the action of electric current, destroys the follicle, thereby preventing the formation of trichiasis. However, electrolysis treatment for trichiasis is only suitable for patients with a small number of misdirected eyelashes, as treating a large number of them can lead to the growth of scar tissue on the eyelid margin, causing complications such as entropion or ectropion. Patients with extensive trichiasis generally need to undergo surgery for correction and treatment.

Can cataracts be treated with medication in the early stages?

Cataract is a common eye disease and is currently the leading cause of blindness. It often occurs in middle-aged and elderly people, patients with high myopia, and those with chronic inflammation in the eyes. Cataracts can cause a decline in vision, severely reducing the quality of life. In the early stages of cataract formation, it is possible to treat with medication, such as applying eye drops like benzylarginine and pinoxacin, which can delay and prevent the worsening of cataracts. However, it cannot reverse the vision decline caused by cataracts. If the vision decline caused by cataracts has severely affected normal life, work, and study, surgical treatment should be considered promptly. Only by removing the cloudy lens inside the eyeball and replacing it with a transparent artificial lens can vision be restored.

What should be noted for trichiasis?

Patients with trichiasis should note the following: First, when trichiasis damages the corneal epithelium, causing noticeable symptoms of eye pain, foreign body sensation, photophobia, and tearing, medication that promotes the repair of the corneal epithelium is needed, such as recombinant human epidermal growth factor eye drops, recombinant bovine basic fibroblast growth factor eye drops, etc. Second, once trichiasis leads to conjunctivitis, keratitis, and other infectious eye diseases, it is necessary to promptly use antibiotic eye drops for treatment, such as tobramycin eye drops, ofloxacin eye drops, etc. Third, a small amount of trichiasis can be plucked or treated with electrolysis, but for numerous trichiasis caused by entropion, surgical correction of the entropion is required for cure. (Please follow medical advice when using medications.)

Can astigmatism be cured by wearing glasses?

Astigmatism cannot be completely cured by wearing glasses. Astigmatism is a common eye disease and a type of refractive error, usually caused by congenital developmental abnormalities. Some patients' astigmatism is related to poor eye habits, such as squinting for long periods, which can lead to astigmatism. The cornea of people with astigmatism has different refractive powers in the vertical and horizontal directions. Therefore, when light passes through the cornea and enters the eyeball, it cannot converge to form a perfect focus, causing the images projected on the retina to become blurry, and the patient will experience a decrease in vision. By conducting an optometric examination, the exact degree of astigmatism and the axis of astigmatism can be determined, and then corrected by wearing glasses. However, the purpose of correction is to improve the patient's vision, and it cannot eliminate the degree of astigmatism.

Why did a trichiasis suddenly grow?

A sudden formation of an ingrown eyelash is usually due to chronic inflammation in the eyelid margin area, which causes abnormalities in the eyelash follicles. Consequently, the direction of the eyelash growth no longer points straight forward but instead grows toward the eyeball. As the eyeball moves and blinks, the eyelash rubs against the corneal epithelium, causing noticeable symptoms such as a foreign body sensation, stabbing pain, congestion, redness, photophobia, tearing, and a decline in vision. One can visit the ophthalmology department of a hospital for a face-to-face examination and confirmation of the condition. Removing the ingrown eyelash can alleviate the symptoms, but recurrence is possible. If it recurs repeatedly, electrolysis treatment for ingrown eyelashes can be considered. This involves inserting a specially designed probe deep into the follicle of the ingrown eyelash and then passing an electric current through it. The electric current will destroy the follicle of the ingrown eyelash, making it less likely to recur.

Is it better to open the eye corner for inverted eyelashes?

Patients cannot be cured of trichiasis by undergoing canthoplasty. Symptoms of trichiasis generally do not improve after canthoplasty, as trichiasis is usually caused by the abnormal growth direction of the eyelashes at the edge of the eyelid towards the cornea, or by spasm of the orbicularis oculi muscle, causing the eyelid edge to roll towards the eyeball. Trichiasis can injure the corneal tissue, leading to eye congestion, redness, foreign body sensation, pain, photophobia, and tearing. For a small amount of trichiasis, the lashes can be plucked with tweezers, but this often recurs. If trichiasis recurs frequently, electrolysis treatment can be performed to destroy the follicles growing the ingrown lashes, thereby minimizing recurrence. For a large amount of trichiasis caused by entropion, surgical treatment is needed to correct the entropion for a cure.

How to maintain health with floaters normally.

Floating specks is a common ophthalmic disease, caused by vitreous opacities. It frequently occurs in patients with high myopia and the middle-aged and elderly, typically due to aging factors that lead to the formation of dot-like or thread-like turbid substances in the originally transparent vitreous tissue. When light passes through the vitreous body and is refracted, projecting onto the retina, it casts these shadows onto the retina as well, causing patients to see floating speck-like shadows in their field of vision. Patients with floating specks should take the following measures for care: First, maintain eye hygiene, do not rub your eyes; rubbing does not alleviate floating specks and may increase the risk of eye infections. Second, eat more iodine-rich foods, such as kelp, to promote the absorption of vitreous opacities.
